Passion Plus Service Equals Change

In honor of Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month in May, NATA Now is highlighting some of our Asian American and Pacific Islander leaders at the state, district and national levels.


Kimi Lew, MHA, ATC, CEAS, was raised by health care providers – her dad, a pharmacist, and her mom, a respiratory therapist.

As a child, Lew accompanied her mom to her workplace, the University of California at San Francisco Medical Center, for a Take Your Daughter to Work Day program.

Serving Athletes with ‘Aloha’ Spirit

Injuries haven’t precluded Alika Asing, ATC, CSCS, from becoming the athletic training leader he is now.

Asing said he dealt with injuries in his youth, but since encountering athletic training in college, his passion for treating others also experiencing pain has propelled him in his career.

For the Profession and Community

While getting treatment for her college sports injury, Zeny Eakins, ATC, CAA, developed an undying passion for athletic training.

“I was in the athletic training [facility] so much that I was able to observe the daily interactions the athletic trainer had with a variety of athletes,” Eakins said.

Representation in Higher Education

In honor of Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month in May, NATA Now is highlighting some of our Asian American and Pacific Islander leaders at the state, district and national levels.

Since high school, athletic training has been a passion for NATA Research & Education Foundation Research Committee and Athletic Training Research Agenda Committee member Kenny Lam, ScD, ATC, FNATA.

Driven by his love for helping people achieve their goals, Lam said athletic training has been his avenue do so.

Naoko Giblin, PhD, LAT, ATC, came into the athletic training profession with a desire to serve people.

“I wanted to become an athletic trainer because I wanted to contribute to other people’s success, especially in sports,” Giblin said.

Compassionate Leadership in Action

At age 14, Nikki Awaya, MEd, ATC, already knew the athletic training profession was the right path for her.

Now an athletic trainer in the secondary school setting, Awaya said that while she enjoys seeing athletes win completions, it’s even more rewarding to see them win in life.
