In general, athletic trainers are advised against traveling in possession of cannabis-related products until regulations become clearer and afford certain protections. The following information is provided should an athletic trainer consider traveling with cannabis and have approval from one’s directing physician.

The means by which cannabis derivatives (e.g. cannabinoids) can exert their effects on the human body involves the endocannabinoid system, a complex cell-signaling network that involves neural, immune, enzyme-driven, and other physiologic processes.

The use of cannabis derivatives for medicinal purposes and therapeutic potential have been heavily researched over the past several years due to changes in societal and cultural norms. It is the duty of the athletic trainer to be able to educate their patient/athlete and understand the medicinal benefits, the long and short-term side effects, and the associated risks of the use of cannabinoids. It should be noted that utilizing cannabinoids for medicinal and therapeutic benefits should be discussed with a licensed physician prior to initiating treatment.

The NATA Private Practice and Entrepreneurship Value Model is a product of the NATA Council on Practice Advancement Private Practice and Emerging Settings Committee. This document is intended for athletic trainers (ATs) and other stakeholders. The information contained in this document may be used as a guide for ATs interested in business ownership and provides best practice recommendations for the private practice setting.

This value model was created to provide a resource for ATs in entrepreneurship to broaden the knowledge base of worth and value in their setting, to assist in presenting their value and worth to stakeholders, expand general business knowledge and understand the value provided to the target market. It is projected that this information will help ATs create and sustain a successful business.

The NATA State Association Advisory Committee (SAAC) also encourages leaders to build an online repository of resources for members, including NATA publications, public health updates, telemedicine guidance, and state-specific information such as unemployment resources, legislative updates, and COVID-related policies.

Examples from other state associations are included for reference.

The Physician Practice Value Model (PPVM) was developed by the Committee on Practice Advancement to educate athletic trainers, administrators and consumers about athletic training services – especially within the physician practice setting. This document is meant to outline the value and worth an athletic trainer in the physician practice can bring to an institution. As the profession of athletic training continues to grow in stature, this value model will be considered a living document, adapting to economic challenges and public perception. This PPVM will serve as a global overview of other more detailed documents.
