The September/October NATA News includes the article “Before the Blueprint,” which outlines things to consider before a face-lift, renovation or new construction project. To further shine a light on the topic, in this article series, the NATA Secondary School Athletic Trainers’ Committee and other ATs share practical insights and lessons learned from their recent facility projects.

As part of the final turnover process, a comprehensive checklist should be completed to ensure the facility is fully operational. This checklist should include furniture, cabinetry as well as technology, lighting and function.

Meeting with the general contractor prior to the completion of the project is necessary to communicate furniture needs. Furniture installation should include treatment tables, office desks, chairs and storage shelving.

Cabinetry should be inspected to confirm all built-in casework, countertops, drawers and secure storage units have been installed and are functioning properly. Locking cabinets would be helpful to keep paperwork secure.

Technology items should include installation and testing of office phones, computers, printers, Wi-Fi connectivity and security access controls. Modern lighting solutions are leaning away from light switches and utilizing motion lighting. It would be a good idea to get a spare key for the light switch for that time when the custodian turns off the lights, and you show up the next day in a dark room.

The final phase of the project should focus on function by ensuring all athletic training supplies and office materials are put in their intended space. This includes medical supplies, first aid kits, rehabilitation equipment, taping supplies, disinfectants, cleaning products, office supplies and emergency response equipment.

A final walkthrough should verify that all punch-list items have been addressed, warranties and operation manuals have been provided, staff training has been completed, and the facility is clean, secure and ready for daily use.

Upon completion of these remaining checklist items, the athletic training facility will be fully prepared to support athletes, coaches and staff in a safe and efficient environment.
