Rising Star in the profession

Meet Jackson Grant, an inspiring first-year Master of Athletic Training student at the University of Tulsa who's already making waves in the athletic training profession as the incoming chair of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Student Leadership Committee (SLC). Jackson shares his personal journey, what drives him and his vision for the future of athletic training.

Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in athletic training?

A: My inspiration comes from two sources: my parents and, interestingly, a personal setback. After experiencing an injury that was mistreated by my former athletic trainer—ultimately ending my athletic career—I was determined to make the profession better.

Q: What has been your most rewarding moment in athletic training so far?

A: As someone new to the practice of athletic training, one experience stands out. I had the opportunity to work with a high school football athlete—my first independent rehabilitation case. This athlete was dealing with their first significant injury, and I guided them through the entire rehabilitation process. Watching the athlete return to the field and compete again was an incredibly rewarding experience.

Q: How has NATA supported your professional growth?

A: Even in my short time with NATA, the impact has been significant. I have been able to make connections with fellow students who share similar experiences and challenges and learn from professionals across the country who offer fantastic advice and tips.

Q: What advice would you give to someone considering a career in athletic training?

A: Don't let fear of the unknown hold you back and be willing to step outside your comfort zone while learning the ropes of the profession. Doing this has already allowed me to meet so many new people, make so many meaningful connections and learn so much in a short amount of time.

Q: How do you see the profession evolving, and what role will NATA play?

A: I envision a future where more students and young professionals actively participate in shaping the profession. Their fresh ideas, unique personalities, and innovative contributions will be crucial for advancement. NATA gives students and young professionals a place to come together with established professionals for the betterment of the profession.
