Training for Active Shooter Emergency

By Heather Harvey, MA, ATC

I’m sure everyone has heard about the mass shooting that occurred in San Bernardino, California. The Inland Regional Center, where the shootings took place, is about 15 minutes away from my workplace, and we have all had some connections with people who were either there or, sadly, lost their lives in the attack. A graduate of our school (a former basketball player) lost his father.

Dallas AT works with others to save referee’s life

As an athletic trainer for 44 years, Robert Ramos, MS, LAT, ATC, is used to staying on his toes and being ready for whatever may happen. These skills were put to the test Oct. 26 when he was working a Gateway Charter Academy home game in the Dallas area and a referee needed lifesaving assistance.

Ramos, AT coordinator with Lakewood Orthopaedics, was at the Gateway vs. Wortham High School football game as part of his athletic training outreach duties, which he began in 2010 after he “retired.”

The #BetterTogether Winner is

Last month we unveiled the new website for the 67th Clinical Symposia & AT Expo and the corresponding theme for the convention which is #BetterTogether. We also launched the #BetterTogether contest and asked ATs to show us their take on the theme, that athletic trainers are better together and convention is more fun with a friend. Now, after nearly 15,000 votes were cast for the 15 finalists, we have a winner.

Environmental Cold Injuries Handout

To help you keep your athletes and members of your community safe and active this winter, NATA has created an Environmental Cold Injuries Handout (pdf), found on p. 42 in the December NATA News. In it, you find information on the four common environmental cold injuries—hypothermia, frostbite, chilblain and immersion foot—as well as safety tips.

Help Us Choose the #BetterTogether Winner!

The #BetterTogether contest ended last week and the participation from athletic trainers across the country was great. We received nearly 200 photo and video entries! So who will win a free trip for two to the convention in 2016? Well, that’s where we need your help. We were so impressed by the creativity shown in the number of entries we received that we had a hard time choosing who we thought was the very best.

Concussion: Differentiating from concern and paranoia

By Beth Sitzler

In recent years, there has been an upswing in concussion awareness and the dangers that surround repeat traumatic brain injuries. While this awareness has increased research, education and even legislation surrounding concussions, the pendulum may have swung too far in the opposite direction, creating paranoia.
