Timely Topics: The AT and Advancing Safety Protocols in Public Safety Academies
NATA’s Council on Practice Advancement (COPA) Public Safety panel presents a critical conversation featuring experts from the Public Safety Athletic Trainers Society and COPA addressing the rise in preventable deaths and life-threatening incidents among law enforcement academy recruits—particularly those linked to heat illness and sickle cell trait complications.
In light of recent investigative reporting highlighting the disturbing trend of recruit fatalities during training, this session will focus on how athletic trainers and their stakeholders can drive meaningful change within police academies and other tactical settings. With summer temperatures on the rise and no significant reforms yet implemented, this discussion is both urgent and actionable.
Attendees will gain insights into:
- The physiological risks facing recruits, including those with sickle cell trait.
- The unique challenges of the academy environment that increase the likelihood of heat-related incidents.
- Advocacy strategies, policy recommendations, and tools to influence safer standards of care in public safety training programs.
