NATA Names Mollie Pillman as Executive Director

NATA announced that Mollie Pillman, MS, MBA, CAE, will begin her role as executive director Sept. 2. Pillman was selected following a highly competitive national search led by executive search firm Vetted Solutions.

Cramer Student Lounge Offers Free Food, Giveaways and More

The Cramer Student Lounge returns with more great offerings for 2015! The Cramer Student Reception is scheduled for 4 p.m. on June 24, providing students the opportunity to network, enjoy free food and get the highly sought after Cramer giveaway item a day early. Free Wi-Fi will also be available in the student lounge throughout the convention.

2015 Quiz Bowl Teams Set!

The 10 teams that will compete at the 2015 NATA Quiz Bowl in St. Louis have been determined. Scheduled for 5 p.m. on June 25 at the convention, the Quiz Bowl is now in its seventh year and features teams from each district in a Jeopardy-style competition. More than bragging rights will be on the line as the winning team receives $1,000 toward the school’s athletic training program or club. The second and third place teams will receive $500 and $250 respectively.

Athletic Training and Public Health Summit, August 27-29

The College of Public Health and Human Sciences at Oregon State University is convening a summit from August 27-29 dedicated to promoting the integration of public health approaches into the practice of athletic training. Since the beginning of the profession, injury and illness prevention has been a hallmark of the work done by athletic trainers. Much of this work has, and continues to be, appropriately focused on the individual.

Keynote Amy Purdy Uses Creativity to Succeed with Prosthetics

When we interviewed our 2015 Johnson & Johnson Keynote Speaker Amy Purdy for the June NATA News, we had an in-depth discussion with her about the various prosthetics she uses for her active lifestyle, which ranges from professional snowboarding to her successful stint on "Dancing with the Stars." She talked to us about the limitations of most prosthetics and how she teamed with her prosthetist to come up with creative solutions for her needs.

Live Tommy John Surgery Demo at Convention

Attendees at the convention in St. Louis will be able to observe a live demonstration of the Ulnar Collateral Ligament procedure, more famously known as Tommy John surgery. Listed under the title "Live Surgical Demo: Elbow" it will be one of the Feature Presentations during the week and take place Friday, June 26, from 8:15 - 10:15 a.m. The session will be held in the Ferrara Theatre at America’s Center Convention Complex.

ATs Provide TBI Education at Pentagon

On May 11 a team of athletic trainers along with United States Naval Academy team physician CAPT. Scott W. Pyne, MD gathered at the Pentagon to present on TBI in the military adolescent athlete. TBI was just one of the topics highlighted as part of a follow up tactical Parenting Conference sponsored by the Henderson Hall Marine Corps Community Services, Marine and Family Behavioral Health Program.

Parents and the New Concussion Paradigm

Parents are more educated, more concerned and more aware of the dangers of concussions than ever before. How we communicate with parents or guardians of our concussed athletes has entered a new paradigm. This new model of communication requires documentation and more importantly, understanding. How we ensure parents understand what has happened to their child’s brain is the ultimate goal of the athletic trainer and physician.
