Director of Business Development

We are seeking a new Director of Business Development with at least seven years of business development, sales, or partnership management, preferably in association or health care related industries. 

The Director of Business Development is responsible for driving revenue growth and strategic partnerships for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA). This role focuses on cultivating and maintaining relationships with three key audiences:

  1. Industry Vendors and Partners – Develop and manage partnerships resulting in sponsorship and advertising support, exhibit hall booth sales, member perks program benefits and collaboration on innovative research initiatives.
  2. Employers of Athletic Trainers – Promote group membership, convention attendance, educational resources and advocate for increased hiring of athletic trainers across diverse settings.
  3. Educational Programs – Support the athletic training pipeline by strengthening relationships with high schools and universities to increase student membership, promote exam preparation resources and other relevant offerings, as well as make athletic training an attractive career choice.

The ideal candidate will deeply understand the unique settings and challenges athletic trainers face at various career stages to curate offerings and communication strategies that resonate with each audience.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Relationship Management:

  • Build and sustain long-term partnerships with vendors, employers and educational institutions.

  • Serve as the primary liaison for business development initiatives, ensuring alignment with NATA’s mission and goals.

Revenue Generation:

  • Develop and execute strategies to increase sponsorships, advertising sales, exhibit booth participation and member perks program engagement.

  • Drive growth in group memberships, student memberships and educational resource sales.

Market Insight & Innovation:

  • Research industry trends and employer needs to identify new opportunities for collaboration and revenue streams.

  • Create tailored offerings for each audience segment based on career stage and setting.

Event & Program Support:

  • Partner with internal teams to maximize vendor and employer engagement at NATA’s annual convention and other events.

  • Collaborate on initiatives that strengthen the athletic training student pipeline.

  • Support the NATA Career Center and AT Central hub in the exhibit hall at convention.

Communication & Outreach:

  • Develop targeted messaging and ongoing outreach to vendors, employers and educational programs.

  • Represent NATA at industry events, conferences and meetings to promote partnerships and membership growth.

  • Support NATA committees, councils or task forces as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing or related field (Master’s preferred).

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in business development, sales, or partnership management, preferably in association or related health care industries.

  • Proven track record of revenue generation and strategic relationship building.

  • Strong understanding of athletic training profession and its diverse practice settings (preferred).

  • Excellent communication, negotiation and presentation skills.

  • Ability to travel as needed.
