Seeking Editor-in-Chief for Education Journal

The Athletic Training Education Journal (ATEJ) Editor-in-Chief (EIC) position becomes available in June 2017. The term of appointment is three years and can be renewed once, with agreement between the EIC and NATA, for a total of six years of service. Electronic applications are being accepted.


Position Description
The ATEJ EIC is responsible for all steps of the publication process and works closely with the Managing Editors, Senior Associate Editors, and Associate Editors on executing these steps including developing the editorial outline; soliciting manuscripts; ensuring a fair, courteous, and objective peer-review process; making final publication decisions; communicating with authors; and reviewing and approving final manuscripts for publication. The EIC strives to advance the ATEJ; seeks to increase readership; and to increase efficiency in the review of manuscripts on an ongoing basis.


The EIC coordinates the strategic plan for the journal to fulfill the mission, vision and aims of the journal. The EIC also helps provide education for reviewers and submitters during workshops and other educational venues.


The ATEJ Editor-in-Chief also serves as the Education Journal Committee (EJC) Chair and assembles and manages the editorial board. The members of the committee are the ATEJ Senior Associate and Associate Editors.

The ATEJ  is housed in the NATA publications office, which also houses the Journal of Athletic Training. The EJC falls under the umbrella of the Executive Committee for Education (ECE.)  The EIC is responsible for communication with NATA staff and appointed NATA BOD liaisons.


Travel responsibilities and additional conference call engagement is required of this position.  Travel is expected to the NATA Clinical Symposium, NATA Educators’ Conference, NATA Joint Committee Meeting, and to development conferences as approved. 


A stipend is paid directly to the EIC.


Required Qualifications

  • A record of publication in scholarly journals with an emphasis on athletic training education
  • Experience in serving on editorial board(s) and/or as a journal editor
  • Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills
  • An excellent knowledge base in education and a broad and balanced perspective of the field
  • A record of meeting deadlines
  • Computer skills and access to the Internet
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
  • Have a NPI number


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience making publication decisions
  • Familiarity with manuscript production processes
  • Experience building consensus and developing thematic projects


  • September 30, 2016: Electronic applications due
  • October 2016: Finalists interviewed
  • November/December 2016: BOD approval and notification
  • December 2016/January 2017: Incoming EIC begins shadowing current EIC
  • June 2017 – Incoming EIC assumes position
