Boerne Athletic Training Room Leads Texas With Five All-State Students
Boerne Champion High School placed five seniors on the Texas State Athletic Trainers Association Academic All-State Team when winners were announced earlier this semester. It was the most for any high school in Texas.
Carley Cuevas, Lindsey Driskell, Megan Gaiten, Sarah Wiggins and Amanda Winstead each held grade-point averages of 92 or higher, the mark needed to be named All-State. Boerne (pronounced Burn-e) Champion is consistently among the state leaders in student academic performance, but this year, Terry Gault’s crew did well enough to earn an article in the local newspaper and a visit by one of NATA’s most decorated athletic trainers.
Former Lamar University head athletic trainer Paul Zeek, a 1989 NATA Hall of Fame inductee, paid a visit to the winning students earlier this month. Zeek is a former President of the Southwestern Athletic Training Association and former Vice President of NATA.
“He talked to us about what he did and how he started in athletic training, and he gave some advice to the girls who are planning to go into athletic training,” said Wiggins, a senior who plans to attend Texas A&M next fall. “He said it was a great career and a lot of fun. It was very nice of him to come and visit.”
Champion High has 36 students, including eight in this year’s senior class, who assist in the athletic training room. Each senior student works with two sports during the school year. “They do a great job in the classroom and a great job in the athletic realm,” Gault told the Boerne Star in a February article. “We’ve always had strong academics in the program and it’s nice that it continues to go in that direction.”
