Abstract:
The number one killer of athletes is sudden cardiac death. The ideal situation in preventing this tragedy is to identify an abnormality prior to competition. We see many sports medicine teams now taking a proactive approach to combat this highly publicized event. However, there still appears to be great discrepancies in testing standards, protocol, and education. We look to examine these inconsistencies while addressing liability issues and the cost effectiveness of the different settings (i.e. high school, collegiate, and professional).
Presenter:
Joe Rogowski, MA, ATC, LAT, CSCS
Athletic Heart Cardiac Research Institute
Consultant Orlando Magic

Joe Rogowski is entering his fifth year as a consultant for Athletic Heart Cardiac Research Institute and his sixth season with the Orlando Magic. Following his undergraduate degree from DePauw University in Athletic Training, Rogowski received his master's degree from the University of Central Florida. It was here that he specialized in the cardiac physiology and testing of the athletic heart. He has spoken at the MLB, NHL, and NBA medical conferences with some of the most respected and researched cardiologists in the country. These cardiologists and Rogowski collaborated to develop Athletic Heart Cardiac Research Institute.
