Abstract: This presentation reviews issues related to electrocardiogram (ECG) testing during athletic preparticipation examinations (PPE), including a model for predicting accuracy and costs of ECG testing. Controversies of ECG testing in PPEs, key resources, and current guidelines and recommendations are also discussed.

Daniel P. O’Connor, PhD, ATC is an assistant professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance at the University of Houston. His research interests focus on evaluation of the effectiveness of health-related interventions and the use of statistical models to explain individual variation in outcomes and health-related quality of life. He has authored and co-authored more than 60 papers in peer-reviewed medical journals and a number of book chapters, as well as the textbook Clinical Pathology for Athletic Trainers, currently in its second edition.

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this presentation, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe, compare, and contrast the advantages and disadvantages of incorporating ECG testing as a standard part of athletic preparticipation examinations.
  2. Identify and interpret current guidelines and recommendations regarding ECG testing in athletic preparticipation examinations.
  3. Determine whether ECG testing would be useful and feasible in their practice and setting.
