Abstract:
The purpose of this presentation is to prepare athletic trainers and others responsible for the health maintenance and performance enhancement of athletes for the challenges in understanding and working with individuals who present with disordered eating or who may be at risk. This requires a heightened knowledge and appreciation for the predisposing risk factors; clinical features and behavioral warning signs; physical signs, symptoms and medical complications with special reference to adolescents and adults; screening methodologies; treatment considerations; the timing and quality of multiple interventions; and preventive measures.
Presenter:
Christine “Tina” M. Bonci, MS, ATC, LAT
Co-Director, Division of Athletic Training/Sports Medicine
Department of Intercollegiate Athletics
The University of Texas at Austin

Tina Bonci is in her 26th year as a certified athletic trainer at the University of Texas at Austin, where she is co-director of the Division of Athletic Training/Sports Medicine in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics for Men and Women. Under her direction, UT has developed a nationally recognized health care model that demonstrates how a non-hierarchical team of campus and community experts – represented by medical practitioners, university academicians and researchers, exercise scientists, coaches and administrators – can be integrated within the framework of higher education to meet the health care needs of student-athletes. Bonci, a noted speaker and lecturer on women’s health issues, has been published in numerous peer-reviewed sports medicine journals. She was chair of a writing group that developed the NATA Position Statement “Preventing, Detecting, and Managing Disordered Eating in Athletes.” This document, published in the Journal of Athletic Training in 2008, emphasized the unique role athletic trainers play on the treatment team and the importance of managing their responsibilities accordingly.
Bonci has served on the NATA Convention Committee, chairing the clinical program for its 50th Annual Meeting in Kansas City. She currently serves as the chair of the clinical program for the Southwest Athletic Trainers’ Association.
In 2006, she was recognized by NATA as a “Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer” for her unique and exceptional contributions to the profession. In 2010, she received the same recognition from the Southwest Athletic Trainers’ Association.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- Formalize and implement a comprehensive DE management protocol that satisfies medical and legal requirements, enlists the support of administrators and coaches, facilitates early detection and treatment, ensures access to quality resources, makes it easier for symptomatic athletes to ask for help, and enhances the potential for full recovery.
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of the full spectrum of maladaptive eating and weight loss behaviors in addition to the predisposing risk factors associated with their development.
- Assemble a team of qualified caregivers who can provide a seamless continuum of care.
- Address issues that arise in case management, particularly athlete resistance and/or non-compliance to referral and treatment;
- Design and implement educational programs that promote healthy eating and weight regulation practices to prevent the development of eating disturbances that may be precursors to full syndrome eating disorders.
