Abstract:

Athletic trainers can strive to practice in more sustainable ways. It doesn't have to be drastic and some of the changes will actually save your department money. This webinar will help athletic trainers make good decisions related to environmental impact and can help them integrate ideas into the athletics department as well.

Errico

Deanna Errico has degrees from the University of Buffalo, Alfred University, Clarkson University, and Simmons College. She has worked as an athletic trainer in the clinical and collegiate settings, including Wells College and St. Lawrence University. Deanna began teaching at Clarkson University in 2002 and taught most recently as a clinical assistant professor in the academic physical therapy program at Clarkson focusing on Cardiopulmonary, Exercise Science, and Orthopedics and works at Canton-Potsdam Hospital as a physical therapist.

Deanna has also played an active role in her state and district by serving on various committees, including positions of Secretary, Region IV Representative, and Hall of Fame Selection Committee Member for the New York State Athletic Trainer’s Association. She is currently the Hall of Fame Selection Committee Chair and President-Elect for NYSATA. Positions with the Eastern Athletic Trainers’ association included Secretary, EATA 50th Anniversary Committee Member, and EATA 60th Anniversary chairperson. She currently continues as the EATA Information Center Chair. Deanna co-coordinated the North Country Athletic Trainers’ Association Symposium in July 2009 in Canton, NY, and the NYSATA annual symposium in Lake Placid, NY in 2011.

Deanna’s research agenda includes environmental issues, systemic sclerosis, hypermobility syndrome, and problem-based learning education. She has a strong interest in aquatic rehabilitation and pharmacology. She participated regularly as a certified athletic trainer at the Empire State Games.

Deanna received the first awarded NYSATA Service Award in January 2005 (now the John Sciera Service Award), the EATA Recognition for Service as Secretary in January 2006, the NYSATA Sheehan Award in 2009, and the EATA Presidential Award in 2009.

  • Understand the meaning of sustainability and why daily life and athletic training should and can be altered to achieve it.
  • Apply conservation techniques related to water and energy in the athletic training room.
  • Consider alternative products and procedures in athletic training facilities and at home .
  • Determine how to incorporate the concept of sustainability and environmental principles into the athletic training room and curriculum.
