Abstract:
Participants will learn about the current state of performance enhancing drug use by North American Youth. By using real-life examples, the speakers will illustrate the devastating consequences that these drugs can have on individuals and institutions. The most seasoned professionals among us will come away from this presentation with a new appreciation for the importance and timeliness of this topic.
Presenters:
Don is president of the Taylor Hooton Foundation and is the leading national spokesman on the topic of performance enhancing drug use by the youth of North America. He has spoken directly to over a quarter of a million people on this subject. He has addressed Congress as an expert witness on this subject on three occasions. He has been recognized for his work in this field: Don was named Texas Sports Personality of the Year by the Dallas Morning News and was named one of the Top 100 Most Influential Sports Educators in America by the Institute for International Sport in 2007. Most recently, he was selected to receive the Distinguished Service Award by the United States Sports Academy.
Bob Copeland, Director of Athletics, University of Waterloo
Mr. Copeland is the Director of Athletics and Recreational Services at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Prior to his tenure as Director, he held the position of Associate Vice President, Development at Waterloo. Mr. Copeland has an extensive background in sports administration, marketing, and development and currently oversees one of the largest varsity athletics program in Canada with 32 teams and almost 600 student-athletes. Mr. Copeland has become a leading advocate regarding Performance Enhancing Drug Education and Policy change in Canada; he was a key member of a national Task Force in Canada that examined this issue and was appointed as the Chair of the Ontario University Athletics Performance Enhancing Drugs Education Task Force.
