Abstract:
Concussion or Mild Traumatic Brain Injury is considered by some in field of neurology to be a “silent epidemic”. Although much has been accomplished in the fields of research, diagnosis, education and public awareness there is still a long road ahead of us. Athletic trainers are leading the way in the recognition, diagnosis and clinical management of concussion. The focus of this webinar is to update athletic trainers on current research in areas of injury pathophysiology, diagnosis through neuropsychological evaluation and advanced imaging techniques as well as a review of the clinical management of athletes recovering from concussion.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will:
- have an increased understanding of the cellular dysfunction underlying concussion and it’s neurologic sequelae.
- have an increased understanding of current diagnostic approaches to concussion (neuropsychological evaluation, advanced imaging techniques)
- review the signs, symptoms and clinical management of concussion. This will include a review of the ‘Return to Play’ protocol.
- learn about the potential for treatment of individuals recovering from concussion based on current literature.
