Dear Friends and Fellow Certified Athletic Trainers,
I wanted to share information about my upcoming trip to Ghana where I will be working with the University of Illinois' International Disability Sport Outreach Program providing wheelchair sports to those who would not other wise have access. I will be traveling with members of University of Illinois wheelchair athletic program, including Paralympian Jean Driscoll. Jean has worked with people with disabilities in Ghana, where she witnessed, "if you have a disability, it is believed that you are cursed by God. Families reject people with disabilities and either hide them in a room for the rest of their lives or send them to the street. They are considered as dogs."
Our mission is to use to power of disability sport to impact social change and provide opportunity for personal empowerment for the people of Ghana with physical disabilities. There are many opportunities to get involved in the International Disability Sport Outreach Program and this trip to Ghana. Clothing, athletic supplies, wheelchairs, funding to support the athletes and future development of the sports program.
If you are interested in finding out more about my trip to Ghana, or International Disability Sport Outreach Program please call or email myself or Jean Driscoll. Here is a link to provide more information.
If you would like to donate supplies or funding, checks can be sent to :
the non-profit organization Determined to Win with “Ghana-Marissa Siebel.” in the memo of the check,
