There is much overlap between ATCs and DPTs as far as treating athletes/patients is concerned. The biggest difference is, obviously, the setting. One being a training room and the other being a clinic (outpatients PTs for the purpose of this article). Yes, there are differences in education, areas of expertise, patient population, etc. However, outpatient-ortho PTs and ATCs really quite similar in the eyes of this author. The point I am alluding to is this: how is there not more cross-over between the two professions? There are not many, if at all, ATCs who are also DPTs that work for a collegiate team but there are those with both credentials working in the clinical setting. Besides the reimbursement issue, why such the lopsided workforce?
