NATA Welcomes Four New Board Members

Dallas – The National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) will formally welcome four new board members at its 69th Clinical Symposia and AT Expo in New Orleans, June 26-29, 2018. David Gallegos, MA, ATC, Cert. MDT, succeeds NATA’s outgoing District Seven director Chris Mathewson, MSS, ATC, CSCS; Lyn Nakagawa, MS, ATC, CSCS, replaces District 8 director Carolyn Peters, MA, ATC, CSCS; Diane Sartanowicz, MS, LAT, ATC, succeeds District One director Tim Weston, MEd, ATC; and Craig Voll, Jr., PhD, LAT, ATC, replaces District Four director and president-elect Tory Lindley, MA, ATC.

“This continues to be an exciting time to lead the organization, and we will all benefit from the vision, commitment, enthusiasm and experience of our new board members,” said President Scott Sailor, EdD, ATC. “I welcome them to their new roles and look forward to all they will contribute in the years ahead.”

 

David Gallegos, MA, ATC, Cert. MDT

David Gallegos, MA, ATC, Cert. MDT, is the deputy CEO of Southwest Sport & Spine Center, Inc. in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and El Paso, Texas, a position he has held for more than 10 years. He previously served as head athletic trainer/teacher at Gadsden High School in Anthony, New Mexico, for nearly nine years.

Gallegos has performed numerous volunteer roles on behalf of his profession. In addition to holding the positions of secretary and finance chair for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Trainers’ Association, he served on the New Mexico Activities Association Sports Medicine Advisory Committee. In addition, he was the public relations representative to the New Mexico Athletic Trainers’ Association and a New Mexico High School Athletic Training Challenge Sponsor.

Gallegos is one of just 10 athletic trainers credentialed in mechanical diagnosis and therapy. The New Mexico Athletic Trainers’ Association honored him with its Service Award in 2011, and Hall of Fame induction in 2018. Originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, he now lives in Las Cruces. He received his undergraduate and master’s degrees from New Mexico State University.

 

Lyn Nakagawa, MS, ATC, CSCS

Lyn Nakagawa, MS, ATC, CSCS, is currently an assistant athletic trainer at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu and previously served as assistant athletic trainer at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon.

Among her numerous volunteer positions on the national, district and state levels, Nakagawa has served as secretary of the Far West Athletic Trainers’ Association and managing board treasurer of the Hawaii Athletic Trainers’ Association. She was a member of numerous national committees including the NATA Foundation Scholarship Committee and Ethnic Diversity Advisory Committee.

Nakagawa was awarded the Hawaii Athletic Trainers’ Association Ke Alakaʻi Nui (Excellence in Leadership) Athletic Trainer Award in 2018, and the State Special Service Award in 2015. In 2016, she received the Special Recognition Award from the Far West Athletic Trainers’ Association. A native of Pearl City, Hawaii, Nakagawa currently resides in Honolulu. She earned her undergraduate degree from University of Puget Sound and master’s degree from Oregon State University.

 

Diane Sartanowicz, MS, LAT, ATC

Since June 2016, Diane Sartanowicz, MS, LAT, ATC, has served as director of the Massachusetts Concussion Management Coalition (MCMC) at Boston Children’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. For the previous 15 years, she was the athletic trainer and a physical education teacher at the Fessenden School in West Newton, Massachusetts.

Sartanowicz previously served as president of both the Athletic Trainers of Massachusetts and the Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association. She is finishing her term as the NATA District One treasurer and member of the NATAPAC board of directors. She will also complete her duties as vice chair of the NATA District Secretaries/Treasurers Committee. Sartanowicz volunteers on the medical staff of the Boston Marathon as well as the Bay State Summer Games, for which she was medical coordinator for 10 years.

Sartanowicz was the recipient of the NATA Athletic Training Service Award in 2007, and was inducted into the Bay State Games Hall of Fame in 2006. Originally from Cambridge, Massachusetts, she now resides in Framingham, Massachusetts. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Rhode Island and graduate degree from Indiana State University.

 

Craig Voll, Jr., PhD, LAT, ATC

For the past year, Craig Voll, Jr., PhD, LAT, ATC, has been the manager of Sports Medicine for Franciscan Health in Lafayette, Indiana. Previously, he was an assistant professor in the athletic training program at the University of Indianapolis where he continues to serve as an adjunct professor.

Voll is a past president of the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Association (GLATA) and Indiana Athletic Trainers Association (IATA). In addition, he was a member of the NATA State Association Advisory Committee and was the IATA Governmental Affairs chair.

Voll received GLATA’s Golden Pinnacle Award in 2018, and Distinguished Service Award in 2017. In 2014, he became an IATA Hall of Fame Inductee. Among his NATA awards are the Excellence in Leadership Award in 2016, Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award in 2014, and Athletic Trainer Service Award in 2011. A native of Euclid, Ohio, Voll resides in West Lafayette, Indiana. He earned undergraduate degrees from Eastern Michigan University and Ohio State University, master’s from Eastern Michigan University and doctorate from Purdue University.

 

NATA is divided into 10 geographic districts. District  One, which Sartanowicz will lead, covers Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Vermont; District Four which will be championed by Voll, includes Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin; District Seven which will be represented by Gallegos, encompasses Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming; and District Eight, spearheaded by Nakagawa, includes California, Hawaii and Nevada.
