EMERGENCY PLANNING WORKSHOP FOR COACHES, VOLUNTEERS AND
PARENTS WORKING WITH YOUTH TO TAKE PLACE AT

NATIONAL AFTER SCHOOL ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE
Presentation Will Cover Basic Safety Precautions Covered in PREPARE Online Course

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., and DALLAS, Texas, Feb. 2 – To raise the national standards of coaches, volunteers and parents responsible for the safety and well-being of millions of young athletes, the National Center for Sports Safety (NCSS), in conjunction with the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), launched PREPARE. – a comprehensive, online sports safety course in 2004.

At the National AfterSchool Association Conference in San Antonio, Texas, Mark Bohling, MS, ATC, LAT, assistant professor of kinesiology and director of athletic training at Texas A & M University, Corpus Christi, will offer an informative workshop on how to develop an effective sports safety emergency plan, based on information covered in the PREPARE course.

During his presentation on Friday, February 25, Bohling will walk participants through the steps needed to develop a successful plan for their facility or after school program. At the end of the session, they should be able to:

  • Develop and activate an emergency plan for various types of facilities/locations and situations
  • Learn the important components of an Emergency Plan
  • Effectively manage an injury scene
  • Learn how to appropriately stock a first aid kit so it is available in case of an emergency
  • Receive an Emergency Plan checklist

Workshop attendees will also learn more about PREPARE, which covers everything from minor injuries, such as blisters, nose bleeds and ankle sprains, to life-threatening situations, including head and neck injuries. The course, which is available online at www.SportsSafety.org, costs $28 and takes approximately three hours to complete. Participants learn to
P – Pre-plan, in case of emergencies;
R – Recognize emergencies;
E – Emergency Plan (pinpoint the steps needed to be taken once an emergency has occurred);
P – Principles of First Aid (learn the basic first aid techniques every coach should know);
A – ABCs (become familiar with airway breathing and circulation – the basic steps of CPR);
R – Return to Play (determine when it is safe for an injured athlete to return to play); and
E – Enjoy (encourage young athletes to get back into the game).

"I believe the ‘PREPARE Your Emergency Plan Now’ workshop at the National AfterSchool Association Conference, will give participants the confidence and know-how they’ll need to handle many situations, including possibly saving lives,” says Bohling.

The 17 th National AfterSchool Association Conference will take place at the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas on Thursday and Friday, February 24 and 25, 2005. For more information, please visit naaconference.org.
