Q: Hi Marje,

I am a freshman at UIC majoring in kinesiology and I am interested in being an athletic trainer. I was wondering if there was any way for you to help me find an athletic trainer in Chicago to shadow for some backround knowledge. I have tried to look up associations that will allow me to shadow them, but for everything I have found, you have to be at least a junior.

I would really appreciate any help you could offer me.

Thanks very much

A: Hi,

Thanks for your question. There are so many outstanding athletic trainers in the Chicago area. I would contact Tory Lindley,Head AT at Northwestern (847-491-8867) or Brian Robinson, Head AT at Glenbrook HS, brobinson@glenbrook.k12.il.us. They will be able to point you in the right direction. I know you will enjoy talking with them.

Thanks again!

Q: Hello Marje,

I was inquiring about the qualifications to sit for the national exam. I am LAT and graduated from Howard Payne University in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science. At the time we were in the process of being an accredited program but it never went through. Am i eligible to sit for the national exam?

A: Hi,

You need to contact the BOC for an accurate answer to your question. You can go to their website, www.bocatc.org, to obtain contact information.

Q: Hey Marje-

Been noticing increased use of the term "Athletic Therapist" in my area. I know CATA uses the Certified Athletic Therapist title, but not sure if athletic therapist without the certified in front of it is the same title. As Certified Athletic Trainers do we recognize an "Athletic Therapist" as an allied health professional?

A: Hi,

The officical name for BOC certified athletic trainers is athletic trainer, certified. Athletic therapist is the official title for the CATA, but not for BOC certified athletic trainers. We definitely recognize the CATA and their athletic therapist members and have an excellent relationship with them.

Q: Good evening,

I am an orthopaedic PA in the U.S. Military. I recently assumed a supervisory position of two Athletic Trainers.

The two Trainers provide superb patient care. Some of my coworkers have questions regarding their scope of practice. They routinely drain/unroof blisters on their patients.

I feel that these two ladies are qualified to provide this care/treatment, but some of my fellow providers do not agree.

Can you provide me with scope of practice guidelines for Athletic Trainers and if you have any information specifically related to blister care?

A: Hi,

The first step is to review the state athletic training regulatory act in PA. That will give you the guidelines for the practice of athletic training in your state. It is my opinion that what you describe is definitely within the scope of practice of certified athletic trainers, but you definitely need to check with your state regulatory act first.
