Biography

Mike has given a number of lectures on shoulder, knee, and low back rehabilitation. He has also given a number of number of lectures on the management of cervical spine injuries and was the lead author of a journal article that appeared in the June issue of The International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy entitled “THE RIDDELL RIPKORD SYSTEM FOR SHOULDER PAD
REMOVAL IN A CERVICAL SPINE INJURED ATHLETE: A PARADIGM SHIFT”
 

Abstract

To introduce new concepts in “on field management” and pre-hospital care of cervical spine injuries as it relates to a football players.


Clinical Objectives

At the conclusion of this presentation, the learner will be able to:

  • Discuss the various types of lifts used to place an injured athlete on a spine board as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each type of lift.
  • Identify the various types of helmets used in football and discuss the proper techniques used to remove the facemask.
  • Discuss the potential benefits and drawbacks of removing the shoulder pads and helmet prior to transportation to the Emergency Room.
