District Representative:

George Wham, EdD, ATC, SCAT
 
Dr. George Wham serves as head athletic trainer and assistant athletic director at Pelion High School in Pelion, SC where he works closely with the physicians at the Moore Orthopaedic Center, oversees a staff of two assistant athletic trainers, and mentors many athletic trainer student aides.  He earned his undergraduate degree from Presbyterian College (1996), and his masters (1998) and doctorate (2006) from the University of South Carolina.  George was certified as an athletic trainer in 1997 and has been a member of the NATA since 1993. 
 
George has been professionally active on the state level chairing the SCATA Governmental Affairs Committee (2010-2014) and the High School Workshop Committee (1999-2004; 2006-2007).  He also served on the Public Relations Committee (2008-2011) and currently serves on the Hall of Fame Committee.  On the district level George represented SC on the District 3 Secondary School Committee (2011-2014) and served as an abstract reviewer for the MAATA Symposium Free Communications program (2008-2011).  Since 2006 George has served a member of the Board of Directors for the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association giving athletics trainers a greater voice in high school athletics in SC.  In 2012 he became an officer and in the 2014-2015 George will serve as SCACA President.  
 
Dr. Wham has previously served as both a full-time and adjunct faculty member in the University of South Carolina’s Athletic Training Education Program.  He has served as a manuscript reviewer for the Journal of Athletic Training and has been published in the JAT, the Journal of the SC Medical Association, and Athletic Therapy Today.  George has delivered over 30 presentations at state and national conferences related to his research and issues involving appropriate medical care in secondary school athletics.  He has served as a sports medicine consultant for the Brain Injury Association of SC, the SC High School League, and the SC Department of Education.  For many years George taught in the SC Department of Education’s DIRECT program (alternative teacher certification program) helping AT’s earn teacher certification in the area of health science.    
 
Dr. Wham has been honored as SC Athletic Trainer of the Year (2014), USC Athletic Training Alumnus of the Year (2014), NATA Athletic Training Service Award (2013), NC-SC Shrine Bowl Head Athletic Trainer (2013), NC-SC Baseball All-Star Game Head Athletic Trainer (2005), and SCADA North-South All-Star Football Head Athletic Trainer (2000).
 
George and his wife Julie live in Lexington, SC and have three children: Samuel, Merritt Elizabeth, and Preston.
