Inter-Association Task Force on
Exertional Heat Illnesses Consensus Statement

 

Douglas J. Casa is the chair of the expert panel of the Inter-Association Task Force on Exertional Heat Illnesses Consensus Statement, which is comprised of representatives from 18 national health and sports medicine organizations. They include: the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Dietetic Association, and the CDC – Nutrition and Physical Activity. The Task Force’s mandate was to establish guidelines to increase safety and performance for individuals engaged in physical activity, especially in warm and hot environments. Dr. Casa announced its findings during NATA’s Annual Meeting on Thursday morning, June 26, at a press conference held in St. Louis at the Edward Jones Dome at America’s Center.

 

Dr. Casa is also a contributing author of NATA's “Exertional Heat Illnesses” Position Statement and currently serves as chair of the organization's pronouncement committee, which is intimately involved with the entire position statement process. In 2000, he chaired NATA's “Fluid Replacement for Athletes” Position Statement and has extensive research and practical experience in the areas of dehydration, rehydration, exertional heat illness, hydration status, physiology of exercise in the heat, fluid regulation and nutritional ergogenic aids.

At the University of Connecticut Dr. Casa is Director, Athletic Training Education, and Assistant Professor, Department of Kinesiology. He has served on the medical teams of the Boston Marathon and New York City Marathon.

 

Dr. Casa is an editorial board member of Journal of Athletic Training and Journal of Sport Rehabilitation. He received his bachelor's degree from Allegheny College, master's degree from the University of Florida and his PhD from the University of Connecticut.
