From his beginning as a student athletic trainer at Purdue University in 1937, Alfred "Duke" Wyre went on to become one of the most respected athletic trainers in the profession. Wyre, who spent more than 20 years at the University of Maryland as head athletic trainer, was one of the founding members of the NATA and was president of the Southern Conference Trainers Association in 1948. Wyre is the designer of the "Duke Wyre Shoulder Vest" protective pad used by several high schools, colleges and professional football teams. Wyre was inducted into the NATA Hall of Fame in 1966 and is now deceased.
