Julie Max
2000 - 2004
Julie Max, MEd, ATC, became president of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association in 2000, capping years of service to the profession.
She earned an associate’s and bachelor’s degree in physical education from California State University, Fullerton before being certified as an emergency medical technician. She earned a master’s in education with an emphasis in physical education from Azusa Pacific University.
Since 1979, Max has been employed at CSU Fullerton, where she is an instructor and has served as co-head athletic trainer. Currently, she heads the internship athletic training education program and the athletic training clinical program.
Max’s leadership experience includes:
- District Eight NATA board member, 1990-96, serving as NATA Vice President, 1991-92; member of the Finance Committee, 1991-96 (chair 1992-96); and chair of the Investment Committee, 1992-96;
- Continuing Education Subcommittee of the Education Council, 1997-present;
- Pronouncements Committee, 1997-99;
- 50th Anniversary Task Force, 1996-99;
- Corporate Sponsor Committee, 1990-94;
- Chair of Governmental Affairs Task Force, 1991-92;
- Committee to Hire Executive Director, 1992-93;
- Task Force on Long Range Planning, Mission Service, 1990;
- Convention Committee Program Chair, 1987;
- Anaheim Union High School Committee to hire ATCs in high schools, 1996-present;
- Coordinator of California Athletic Trainers’ Association Teleconference, 1996, 1999;
- District Eight Convention Committee, 1983-90;
- District Eight Governmental Affairs Committee, 1980-83;
- District Eight Political Action Committee, 1980-83;
- Orange County Medical Association Clinical Meetings, 1980-82.
Max has volunteered for the 1984 Olympics, for sporting events in Norway and China and for guest speaking engagements and authorship opportunities across the country.
Her awards include the NATA Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award; FWATA Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer; Gary Tuthill Memorial Award for outstanding community contribution; CSU Fullerton Student-Athlete Faculty of the Year Award; Special Recognition for outstanding service to the association as an NATA board member, as an ATC, as NATA vice president and as Finance Committee chair; FWATA Special Service Award for outstanding contributions in the district; CSU Fullerton Student Service Award from Professionals for Diversity Awareness; and CSU Department of Athletics Staff Member of the Year.
