NATSC Members

Chair -Derek Dewig

Derek is currently a senior at Indiana University pursuing a B.S. in athletic training. He is originally from Evansville, Indiana and is a graduate of Reitz Memorial High School where he played football all four years and was a part of two IHSAA state runner-up teams. In addition to being Chair of the NATSC, Derek is also the President of Indiana University’s Athletic Training Student Council. He has worked with a wide variety of sports during his undergraduate career and is currently the athletic training student with men’s soccer. Derek spent the previous summer as an athletic training student intern with the Indianapolis Colts. In his free time he enjoys spending time with friends and family, attending sporting events and reading. After graduating, he intends to pursue a master’s degree in athletic training and ultimately work in a Division 1 collegiate setting.


District One -Stephanie Paynter

Stephanie Paynter is in her senior year as an Athletic Training student at Plymouth State University. She is currently the District 1 Representative in the NATSC. She is also the New Hampshire Delegate and Treasurer of the Eastern Athletic Training Association Student Delegation and the Vice President of the Athletic Training Club at Plymouth. She has been able to work at both the collegiate level and the high school level. After graduation she hopes to work towards getting her masters in order to work in a D1 or professional setting.


District Two -Kyle Jones

Kyle is a senior at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey. He grew up in Franklinville, NJ and graduated from Delsea Regional High School in 2010. Kyle has been heavily involved at Rowan. He is the captain of the football team, he helped form a Special Olympics group on campus that brings together college students and Special Olympics athletes in a competitive environment, he has been involved in numerous activities with the athletic training club at Rowan, and has helped organize and run multiple bone marrow drives. Kyle is not sure which path he would like to take after receiving his Bachelor's Degree, but it includes schooling after Rowan. He hopes to one day work in professional sports.


District Three -Sara Buckley

Sara Buckley is the current District 3 representative, and a junior Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, WV where she is pursuing a B.S in Athletic Training. She grew up in Austin, TX and graduated from McNeil High School and participated in the Health Science Academy. Through this high school academy Sara earned her CAN certification and started her journey to work in healthcare. Sara played Division 2 lacrosse the past two years at Wheeling Jesuit University, however injuries prevent her from continuing as a player, but she hopes to continue to assist the team. In her spare time Sara enjoys working out and cooking. Sara plans to attend graduate school to pursue a career in sports medicine.


District Four -Ben Dixson

Benjamin Dixson is the current District 4 Representative on the NATSC. He is currently a senior at Cedarville University in Cedarville, OH, where he is pursuing a B.A. in athletic training. He grew up in Berwick, PA, and graduated from Bloomsburg Christian School in 2010. As well as being involved with the NATSC, Benjamin has had to opportunity to serve as the secretary/treasurer of the Cedarville Athletic Training Student Organization. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with family & friends, working out, and reading. Benjamin plans to complete the remainder of the medical school prerequisite courses this academic year and take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) in June 2014. He then plans to work for one year while applying to medical schools and begin medical school in the fall of 2015. He is currently undecided as to which specialty in medicine he would like to study.


District Five -Ben Struemph

Ben is a junior at William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri. He grew up in Jefferson City, Missouri and graduated from Helias Catholic High School in 2011. Ben has enjoyed serving on the MOATA Student Leadership Council as a represnative for William Woods University, MAATA Student Leadership Council as the President, and now serving the NATSC as the Chair-Elect. He is also a member of Phi Gamma Delta where he has gained valuable knowledge and leadership skills. Ben got his start in high school where he was a part of the sports medicine club. He started a high school sports medicine competition. After Ben graduates from WWU he hopes to own his own sports medicine and rehabilitation clinic.


District Six -Jessica Waldrep

Jessica Waldrep is currently a junior at The University of Texas at Arlington, where she is pursuing her degree in Athletic Training. She was born in Pittsburg, TX and graduated from Pittsburg High School in 2006, where she was an athletic training student her senior year. She graduated from The University of Texas at Tyler with a degree in Health and Kinesiology. While Interning at a Physical Therapy Clinic she worked with a college football player and realized that working with athletes was what she wanted to do and found athletic training. Currently Jessica is the secretary and District 6 representative of the NATSC and a member of the Athletic Training Student Association at The University of Texas at Arlington. Jessica plans on getting a Master's Degree focused in athletic training and hopes to work for the MLB or collegiate level.


District Seven -Sarah Paul

Sarah Paul represents District Seven and serves as the Planning Subcommittee Chair on the National Athletic Training Student Committee. Sarah graduated from the University of Colorado in Boulder with a bachelor’s degree in Integrative Physiology, and after working as a CU Sports Medicine intern she decided to pursue a career in Athletic Training. Sarah is currently enrolled in the Athletic Training certification program and is working towards a master’s degree in Sport and Exercise Science with a concentration in the Social Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity at the University of Northern Colorado. Running and hiking with her Jack Russell Terrier, family dinners, in addition to lots of laughing are what Sarah enjoys most in life. Someday, Sarah hopes to work internationally as an Athletic Trainer but also welcomes any exciting opportunity that arises until then.


District Eight -Laura Garcia

Laura is a Junior at Chapman Univeristy in Orange, CA pursuing a bachelors degree in athletic training with a minor in nutrition. She grew up in Sao Paulo, Brazil and graduated from the American School of Campinas 2010. Laura participates in the FWATA student committee, is in the Chapman AT student society, and started a health club in the university with over 100 active members. Actively volunteering in the district, she does walk for thoughts, and other athletic training sponsored events. Along with fitting the Latin soccer playing stereotype, she plays volleyball, is in the equestrian club at her school and is a dedicated football fan (go niners!). Laura is not exactly sure what course to pursue, but plans on going to San Diego for graduate school and ultimately working with a professional soccer or a collegiate team.


District Nine -Erin Harrelson

Erin Harrelson is finishing her Entry-level Master’s in Athletic Training at Florida International University in Miami, FL. Originally she is from Yorba Linda, CA. She graduated from University of Reno, Nevada (UNR) with a degree in Journalism with an emphasis in Public Relations and a minor in Marketing. She played soccer for UNR for a year before studying abroad in Melbourne, Australia. After graduation, Erin worked for several years in sports marketing and advertising. Currently, Erin is the District IX representative and is also President of Iota Tau Alpha, Alpha Kappa Chapter, and a member of FIU’s Athletic Training Student Organization. She has clinical experience in Division I Football at FIU and is currently interning with VSI Tampa Bay FC, a USL Pro Soccer team. Erin is certified as an EMT and a Certified Kinesio Taping Practitioner. In her free time she plays soccer, golf, and enjoys going to the beach. After graduate school, Erin plans to work with collegiate or professional soccer athletes and down the road get her PhD and contribute to the education of future athletic trainers.


District Ten -Sam O’Leary

Sam is a junior at Washington State University, and in his second year in the athletic training program. He grew up in Bonney Lake, Wa and graduated from Bonney Lake High School in 2010. Sam has enjoyed his involvement with the NATSC and the NWATA Student Senate thus far, and is looking forward to the rest of his term on these committees. At WSU, Sam is also a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon where he has gained valuable lessons and leadership experiences. He served as the Sound Body chairman, and was in charge of organizing fitness activities and educational seminars on fitness and nutrition. After he graduates from WSU, Sam plans to pursue a master’s degree in athletic training or exercise physiology, and hopes to work in the professional football or division I collegiate setting.
